I have been a practicing RN for six years and have a range of experience in acute care areas. I’ve worked in med-surg, step-down, and ICU floors at many of the major hospitals in Oklahoma. My primary focus has been neuro and stroke, which has given me a wonderful foundation of nursing knowledge. About a year into nursing, I took on my first new grad orientee and have been orienting new grads at every opportunity since.
At eleven years old my appendix burst and I became septic, spending a month in the hospital. After two surgeries, an NG tube, two JP drains, a PICC line, and TPN, I finally recovered and got to go home. Remembering how it felt for my favorite nurse to walk into the room on a bad day inspired me to pursue nursing for myself. I graduated from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma in 2018. My last month of nursing school was spent shadowing an RN full-time, three shifts per week. I was very lucky to have gotten an amazing preceptor, Donna. Donna was not only an incredible nurse--organized, a problem solver, a multitasking machine, and a compassionate caregiver--but also the best teacher and mentor I could have hoped for. The learning experience she gave me inspired my love for teaching from the very beginning of my career. Every time I had a student or new grad orientee, I wanted to give them the best learning experience possible. Over time, I wrote and refined the Cultivating Care orientation model.
On my final shift with Donna, she gave me a beautiful gift: a tiny bag full of globe amaranth seeds. An attached note explained how she had grown them every year since 1990, the year her mother passed away. It also said that the word amaranth means “everlasting,” and she hoped that my nursing career would be everlasting. The healing effect we have as nurses on our patients and their families is certainly everlasting, and with Cultivating Care I wish to grow new grads into great nurses so they may also have an everlasting impact on the lives of their patients.
